Shamwreck 2006-2011
As we approach what should be the last National Banger meeting at Nuttscorner Oval and certainly the last Shamwreck at Nuttscorner Oval, I thought I'd do a piece to reflect on the Shamwrecks that have gone before.
For local banger fans Shamwreck is the big event of the season on these shores, the biggest names, the biggest cars and the biggest hits. The unlimited National Bangers are quite some spectacle around Nuttscorner Oval, there is always a greater array of tin than in any other meeting throughout the season, and the promotion does a fantastic job to assemble the greatest field of visiting drivers that any individual class gets throughout the season.
I think I'm correct in saying that Shamwreck first came to Nuttscorner in 2006 and it was one of my first meetings on the infield at Nuttscorner, although one look at the size of some of the cars and I was back on the other side of the safety fence, and even this weekend I don't know what side of the fence I'll be standing on come start time, it's a much more pleasurable experience watching it from the relative safety of the outside than looking over your shoulder to see what might be about to stray in your direction.
The Bears have made Shamwreck their own ever since the event came to Nuttscorner Oval, they have been the team to beat. Looking back at 2006 Team Savage, The Assassins and Last Rites where as local as challenge as there was as to take on the Bears.
In 2007 the first Team Buckle cars made it out onto the Shamwreck grid as well as a huge yanks for Mark Hughes of the Assasins and Marco of the Keltic Allsorts.
Another well known English team came and flattened just about everything in their way in 2008, as Stinkbridge left their mark on Shamwreck and Paddy Last's Jag was left airborne in what is now known to banger fans as Jag corner.
2009 was the first Shamwreck in which I ventured onto the infield, but only after seeing how things went in the opening heats, which I watched from the old start and finish. The Bears dominated again and Keiran McIvor probably had the nicest car of the day in a fantastically turned out limo.
In 2010 was all about Team Extreme and Scottish visitor Matty in another huge Yank which took on everything that came near it. Booboo of team buckle had another limo which the Bears made short work of.
Fagass of what is now a much depleted Last Rites team was the star of 2011 in a fantastically turned out Mk1 Granada, but all the talking was about a huge follow in on Marc Delgarno, another one to fall victim to Jag corner.
Whoever wins it and whoever stars in 2012, you can be sure it'll be an epic meeting and a fantastic send off to Banger racing at Nuttscorner Oval as the promotion moves on to Tullyroan next month.
