2012 - #24 – Ballymena Raceway – 14/7/12
Since it was on a Saturday and I wasn’t rushing up to the racing from playing indoor football, I actually made it on time for once, but still managed to miss the first race while standing in the pits talking. The Group 2’s opened the meeting with Freddie Fleck taking the opening win before Gary Thompson took heat two. The final seen a rollover early on for Mark Turtle. Curtis Greer ended up the eventual winner. In the Junior Rods there was heat wins for Aiden McFerran and Dean McCrory before McCrory took the honours in the final after the result was taken back a lap when he had been taken out by backmarker Niall McFerran The Open Hot Rods seen one of the best turnouts I’ve seen from them at the Raceway boosted by some National Hot Rods. With numbers one closed grids comes spills and the opening laps seen a track blockage and a few cars out of the race. From the restart it was Paul Nevin who went through to take the win. Bill McCurdy took the heat two honours after Paul Nevin had a big shunt smashing into the wall on the entrance to the start and finish straight. The final seen a win for Davy Gurney. The Stock Rods had a respectable turnout of cars also, boosted by some visitors from Tipperary and Scotland, trying to get a feel for the 2012 World final venue. It sounds quite disrespectful of the effort that visiting drivers have put in down the years, but there was a time they could be discounted unless their name was Latka or Fox, but not now and Alan McCormack became just the latest in a list of visiting Stock Rodders from Ireland to have taken a win at the showgrounds when he took the honours in the Irish Grand Prix for the class. Willy Stewart took all 3 race wins in the 1300 saloons. Approx Car Turnout: 76 cars (27 Gp 2 Lightning Rods, 13 Junior Productions, 5 1300 Stock Cars, 10 Open Hot Rods, 21 Stock Rods)
