2012 - #27 – Tullyroan Oval – 22/7/12 |
Day two of the Speedweekend, European Championship day and an early start to be down to Tullyroan for 11.30 to get all setup ahead of the racing.
The ProStocks kicked off proceedings with James Litter taking a heat win in their Golden Helmet. Later on in the afternoon Steven Haugh took their second heat before Stefan McClelland took the honours in the final ahead of Steven Haugh and Dave Morrison.
In the championships it was the Lightning Rods up first. Stephen Emerson qualified on pole and led the race from lights to flag while Brendan McConnell held second place for most of the race before Winston Wier went around the outside of him in the closing laps to take second. McConnell was later removed from the result for a technical irregularity promoting Nigel Jackson to third.
The lightning Rod support races seen wins for Tim Hazlett and Gordy McKee.
The 2 Litre European was a lively affair with no less than four stoppages. World Champion Will Reed and fellow English visitor Damon Wellman went out within the opening laps. Shane Murray led the race from start to finish with Denver McLean getting up into second early on before Adam Hylands moved through in the late stages of the race. Hylands got close to leader Murray but was unable to mount a challenge on the lead. Andrew Murray came home third.
In the support races there was wins for Philip Beatty and Feargal McNally.
The National Hot Rods joined the bill for the Sunday of Speedweekend for the first time. John Christie walked away with their Irish masters with Keith Martin coming in second and Adam Maxwell third. Martin took the honours in their support race.
The National Bangers completed the billing for Sunday’s action. Keith Carey won their King of Krash title, Alan O’Neill won the Allcomers and Marty McKiernan won the Destruction Derby.
So there you have it, another Speedweekend, the meeting I feel is the highlight of the local oval racing season and represents the middle of the season. Local drivers have kept 2 European Titles and a British title in the country and we’ve added the National Hot Rod world title, not a bad start to the season.
Next up it’s the F2’s at Tullyroan, hopefully the dawn of another new era…. Bring it on!
