2012 - #38 – Ballymena Raceway – 29/9/12 |
There was a time that the last Friday in September seen the end of the F2 season and the end of my season, except perhaps a trip to the superbowl (while boat prices were reasonable) and you normally stood there going through the motions, foundered and not that disappointed to be honest. Up until Saturday while we haven’t had a great summer, we didn’t have too many wet meetings either for the most part of it and it has still been quite mild. This meeting all felt a bit end of season, a small crowd, and nothing special on the race programme and I’m not really sure why there wasn’t an F2 stadium championship this season.
The F2’s made their last appearance of the season at Ballymena, with an 8 car field, from which Craig McConnell took 3 comfortable victories.
The Junior Rods, now branded as “Open” Juniors, for what reason I’ve no idea, included a few cars from Tullyroan and Aghadowey. Cara Wightman took the honours in the final.
In the Gp 2 Lightning Rods, their closed grid final seen a win for Uel McMillan, at a point in the evening when the rain was getting a bit heavier and I decided the stand looked like a better option than the infield.
The ORC Lightning Rods provided, in my opinion, the best racing of the night as Winston Weir and Tim Hazlett put on a great race in both the heats with Hazlett spending quite a bit of time on the outside of Weir. Weit took the honours in what was a bit of a slow burner of a final which came to life in the closing laps as a group of four cars bunched together to battle for the placings
Approx Car Turnout - 56 cars (8 F2's, 13 Junior Rods, 19 Gp 2's, 16 ORC Lightning Rods)
