A Decade Up For Davy
Ten years has now past since Davy McCall first started his promotion at Nuttscorner Oval following the closure of Shamrock Park at the end of 2002.
I know there has been other landmarks have passed in the time I’ve been running NIF2 and I’ve tried to cover them in some shape or form, but this is the first of the landmarks that began was later than the birth of NIF2.

As part of a two day weekend meeting, Nuttscorner ran on Easter Saturday the 19th of April and Easter Monday, 21st of April, with the Monday meeting clashing with a Ballymena meeting.

If I’m not mistaken Neil Capper took the opening race win at the new look Nuttscorner in the Junior Productions. Also on the race card that opening weekend were the 2.0 Hot Rods, Lightning Rods and Senior Productions.

Later in 2003 and in the following years National Bangers, Reliant Robins and National Hot Rods joined the Nuttscorner line up and McCall’s promotion was rebranded Nuttscorner Oval.

While the first local Speedweekend took place in the opening season in 2003, it wasn’t until 2005 that the now traditional Speedweekend really stamped it’s mark on the local oval racing scene, as Nuttscorner Oval held the first of four World Championships hosted at Nuttscorner Oval. Fantastic weather, possibly the warmest weekend I recall being at Nuttscorner, full grids of cars and a packed stadium will live long in the memory of those who attended the meeting.

In 2006 Shamwreck moved from Tipperary to Nuttscorner Oval, I found myself wandering around the infield taking photos and Nuttscorneroval.com went live.

Over the remaining years at Nuttscorner the Speedweekend hosted two more 2 Litre Hot Rod World Championships, the first local World Championship for the Lightning Rods, Shamwreck went from strength to strength while the ProStocks became a great addition to the line up for the budget racer and contact racing fan.

At the end of 2010 there was the first whispers of a new track at Loughgall and throughout 2011 and into 2012 Tullyroan Oval was built, a new state of the art facility which has gone on to raise the bar in local oval racing.

In 2013 Ninja Karts, Superstox and Stock Rods have joined the formula line up in regular race action at Tullyroan and the venue will host the first “World” double header ever seen in the province, when the Lightning Rod World Championship and ProStock World Cup take place on the same weekend in September.

Even throughout a double dip recession the racing at Davy McCall’s promotion has continued to go from strength to strength, here’s hoping that trend continues for a further 10 years at least.
