Football Time Again! |
I’m not sure if it’s just I’m noticing it more or if our wee sport has become more charitable in recent years? Between calendar sales, women's races, Quiz nights, various other activities it seems there is more and more being done to raise money for charity through the sport and through the people involved in the sport.
This Saturday night sees the third annual charity football match for an NI Oval Racing XI as they take on a select squad from the Ballymena Saturday Morning league.
The match takes place at Crumlin United with a 6.15 kick off and will be followed by drinks, raffle, auction and disco in the bar afterwards. It’s sure to be a great night, so come along and show your support for the guys taking part.
All the proceeds are going to the NI Children’s hospice.
The first of the Charity matches took place in 2011 when an the NI Oval Racing team took on a Crewe United Select side, and won 2-1. Amongst the players was Chris Gordon and Glenn Bell who went on to win World titles that year.
The 2012 match was almost called off due to snow in the days running up to it, but a late change of venue allowed the match to go ahead in a game between Co. Antrim and Co. Armagh Oval Racing teams, with a comprehensive 5-0 (I think) win for the Co. Armagh team. Amongst the players was John Christie and Shane Murray who went on to win World Titles in 2013.
