Good Friday for Derek Martin |
Ahead of the meeting at Ballymena that would be the traditional start to the season, it occurred to me what had been missing from the meeting a few weeks ago when our season kicked off, and it turns out it wasn’t Easter eggs, but in fact the increased anticipation when you’re seeing results come in from the afternoon meetings on the mainland. It makes you a little envious when you’ve just got out of work and you’re seeing facebook and twitter updates and photos from people who have been enjoying an afternoon in the sun watching racing, and you’re thinking “it’s nearly our turn”.
Anyway, on track there was 15 National Hot Rods that headlined the Ballymena meeting and former 2 Litre Hot Rod Irish Champion Derek Martin took the opening heat win and the final, while Andrew Murray took the win in the other heat. It’ll probably be unimaginable to some and perfectly believable to others, but since the whole dropped points thing confuses me, I only look at the Nationals points when there is a few rounds to go and I haven’t a clue how they are looking, but it’s getting near that time again.
The F2’s made their first appearance of the season at Ballymena, with 7 cars in action, four of which were new cars to me. Chris Kincaid took a hat trick of wins in the tooz, although Mark Rainey had come very close to taking the heat two win before clipping a tyre and taking the front corner out of the car with a lap to go, which I caught a glimpse of out of the corner of my eye while I was pointing the camera the other way…. Typical!
Aaron Moody became the first person to beat Niall McFerran in the Juniors this year when he took the heat two win, McFerran took the opening heat and the final.
