Action Packed Evening at Aghadowey |
Saturday night seen the first night meeting for DMC Race Promotions at Aghadowey and it proved to be an action packed evening.
Having wasted some of my afternoon to watch two groups of cyclists zip past in a split second in what I can only describe as the most over hyped, but best milked event I’ve ever witnessed, I arrived at Aghadowey somewhat bewildered as to how thousands of people get so excited by something less exciting to me than the drive to a stockcar track, and yet we can only dream of such interest in our we sport, maybe we just need to paint everything pink?
Having already got soaked once by going to watch the Giro and having gone through some pretty grim weather en route to Aghadowey it seemed a little inevitable that somewhere along the line a second soaking would probably be the order of the day, but some how it stayed dry.
The Thunder Rods provided some great action and two heat wins for Del McLaughlin before he went into the wall in the closing stages of the final resulting in dropping a lot of fluids which provided last bend chaos as half the field skated into the wall or into someone who had just come out of it. Ashley Graham took the final win.
In the Stock Rods Victor McAfee and Stephen McNeice shared the heat wins before McAfee took the final win. World Champion Chris Lattka was a visiting driver and wasn’t far away all night.
There was a heat and final win for Bradley McKinstry in the Junior Productions after Graham Fegan won the opener.
It was a night of mixed fortunes for the Superstox, it was great to see another two cars out on track in the shape of former F2 Irish Champion Gavin Fegan, who will still be campaigning an F2 as well, and former Gp 2 Lightning Rod Irish Champion Luscinda Smyth. Gary Grattan took the opening heat with Ryan McClure winning heat two. The final was all set to be a closed grid affair with Gary Grattan on pole, but a generator failure left the track in darkness and the King of Aghadowey final will now take place on the 8th of August. Something that will be unknown to most is that the King of Aghadowey final was on the draft fixture list for the 8th of August, but the NIOvalTV series was slotted in there and the King of Aghadowey was moved to the May meeting, seemingly fate has intervened to move it back.
The Pro Stocks, including visiting driver Jazz Moore, put on 3 good races with plenty of action throughout. Nikki McClelland and Lee Wylie shared the heats before Ryan Fleming won the final.
