Hylands lands the King of Aghadowey
Less than a week after winning the British Championship for the 2 Litre Hot Rods, Adam Hylands’ rich run of form continued at Aghadowey Oval as he claimed the King of Aghadowey title with a heat and final double.

On what is quite a rarity these days in NI there was only one meeting in the province this weekend, I’d like to say that means my weekend isn’t entirely taking up by oval racing, but having spent most of Saturday prepping stuff for NIOvalTV and having spent most of Sunday working through what was captured on Saturday then I’m afraid to report it’s still pretty much an entire weekend dedicated to Oval Racing.
Saturday was also one of the few meetings this season that I’ve gone to with some optimism that it wasn’t going to rain, and indeed it turned out to be a nice night.
The Ninja Karts kicked off proceedings and like the Robins I think they are much better around Aghadowey, certainly from a photography point of view it’s nice to get some shots of them off them airborne as they tackle the bumps at Aghadowey. Shea Fegan took the opening heat win, Matthew Nicholl took the win in the second heat and Callum Magill won the final.
I don’t really have favourite drivers these days and I find that helps me enjoy the racing more, but it still brings a smile to my face when I see someone different taking a win, and that was certainly the case in Lightning Rods when Mark Corry took the second heat win and the final, following an opening heat win from Gordy McKee which in itself was quite a feat given that he came through from the red grade in a race with no stoppages.
European Champion Alan McCormack was a welcome visitor in the Stock Rods while Bobbie Johnston returned to the class. The opening heat went the way of Carl Sloan with former World Champion Chris Gordon winning heat two and Jonny Cardwell took a lights to flag victory in the final.
The Thunder rods took to the track for heat one with twenty four cars by my reckoning, although they only got to turn three before a pile up took some of them out of contention. The Thunder Rods continued to put on some great racing throughout the night with Lee McCloy taking all three race wins.
The 2 Litre Hot Rods raced for their King of Aghadowey trophy, running from a closed reverse grid format it was Stephen Emerson who took heat one with Adam Hylands taking the win in heat two to give him pole for the final. Hylands took the final win with Emerson second and Shane Murray third racing the Saxo that John Murray had out at the previous Aghadowey meeting.
