1300s on Top Form at Aghadowey |
The 1300 Stockcars were on top form again at Aghadowey Oval on Friday night with Curtis Greer taking the King of Aghadowey title.
Around this point of last season I’d come to the conclusion that 1300 Stockcar racing was broken in NI, if there’d been a race for them at the end of my street I likely wouldn’t have gone to watch them and nearly every report I wrote had to include phrases like “were good for a few laps” or “for the amount of cars that were out”. The promotions working together has certainly made the class one of the star attractions of the season and they were probably the class I was most enthused to go and see at Aghadowey on Friday night, a trip I find a hateful drive on a good day, let alone a Friday night dash after a week in work and I’m thankful there is only two more Friday nights left up there this season (yes, I’ve been counting them down!!).
Back to the 1300s, Chris Hammill almost took the win in the opening heat, but for a last bend hit from Curtis Greer who nipped through to take the win on the line. Kieran McIvor took a lights to flag win in heat two, a rare feat in saloons. Curtis Greer took pole for the final and drove off into the distance leaving the chasing pack to squabble for the places, as the race entered the closing laps the yellow flags came up and bunched the group, I didn’t really see what for, but I’m all in favour of big showdown finishes and perhaps competitions yellows should be introduced in oval racing as they do add to the spectacle. Greer got away again on the restart but Hammill ended up in the wall bringing out the yellows just one lap on and the fireworks resumed on the drop of the Green, big hits went in, there must have been three or four different leaders including Ivan Elliott who had started the race last, Greer was down to fifth or sixth at one stage and back into the lead a lap later and went on to lead home Nickly Lowry and Peter Greer.
Another class not to be overlooked in the action stakes at the minute is the ProStocks, a decent field of cars assembled including reigning British Champion Tam Melrose. Stuart Agnew took the opening heat and Leonard Dunn took heat two and the final.
Most NHR fans will have had a busy July/ August following the class, but I think I last seen them back in May, and it’s tough getting back into what’s happening in a class when you haven’t seen them in a while. Andy Stewart took the opening heat and Carl Sloan took heat two and the final, I’d love to explain more about their racing, but I spent most of it trying different shots to try and get some promotional material gathered up for the upcoming British Championship weekend.
Joshua McMullan and Jonny Gillispie won heats in the Thunder Rods before Adam White won the final.
