Jackson Bows out with a Title |
Having announced that the weekend’s action in Northern Ireland would be the end of his Superstox career (for now at least), Steven Jackson bowed out in style by winning the Irish Open Championship at Tullyroan.
Nick Roots continued where he left of on the Saturday night by winning the opening heat and went on to build on that by taking the second heat as well to stake his claim to pole for the final.
A pile up on the home straight on the first lap brought about the only stoppage of the Irish Open and it was Nick Roots who led Wesbroom and Denver Grattan on the restart with Jackson having dropped to fourth. From the off Wesbroom attacked Roots, Grattan attacked Wesbroom and Jackson attacked Grattan. After a few laps and the race settled it was Roots out front with Jackson second and Salmon third, until Jackson pushed Roots wide around turns one and two and he went through to take the lead and Salmon moved up to second and soon Denver Grattan would be through and into third. The lead three extended the gap on each other as the race went on and finished in that order with Jackson taking the win in what he says will be his last Superstox race, he celebrated with quite an impressive set of do-nuts.
On the whole it was the first of the three Speedweekends at DMC this year that felt like a Speedweekend, even if the Sunday crowd looked like it was well down on what you’d expect from the second day of the Speedweekend. The July weekend was marred by horrible weather on the Sunday, the NHR weekend went a bit pear shaped when the NHR’s didn’t really show up on the Sunday, the Superstox maintained good numbers throughout the weekend and given the summer we’d had the weather was certainly better than you’d have hoped for. All round a cracking weekend and it showed the potential of the Superstox in Northern Ireland.....
