2011 - #9 - Ballymena Raceway 6/5/2011 |
My ninth short oval meeting of the year actually turns out to be my thirteenth event when you include car shows, Kirkistown and practice days. Thirteen clearly wasn’t to be lucky for me, with my camera playing up in the opening race and packing in during the second.
The night therefore almost became a sort of night off from photography duties and I got to sit back to watch the meeting from the stand, while trying to fix my camera and posting for help on facebook with my phone.
Onto the racing itself. The big event for the night was the National Hot Rods World Series NI round 12, with a grid of eleven cars. Stewart Doak took the opening heat in wet conditions, with Paul Crawford taking the second heat in drying conditions, with Keith Martin producing the drive of the night to go around most of the field and in the closing laps it looked as though he’d go around Heatrick and Crawford too, but looked to settle for third. Thomas Dilly took the win in the final ahead of Mark Heatrick and Doak.
Jason Smyth took his first final win in the Group 2 Lightning Rods, which featured quite a bit of action, as ever with Gareth McCrory rolling in the opening few laps of the first race.
The Stock Rods had a roller as well with Richard Harper the unfortunate victim. William Laffin took the final in the Stock Rods.
Possibly the biggest cheers of the night was for Jamie McCurdy who took the final for the Juniors.
I think Stephen Nevin won the Classics final, but to be honest at the time I was using facebook on my phone.
Here is pretty much all the photos I ended up with from the meeting
