Race Retro 2018 |
For a few years now Race Retro has been on my radar of events I’d like to get to. In recent years as I’ve joined more and more Group B Rally Car groups on facebook the appeal has grown and seeing Martin Kingston’s photos he posted of last years event helped tip the scales too.
For those unaware of what Race Retro is I can best describe it as a car show of older racing cars, mostly rally cars and probably it’s main focal point in those is Group B, or at least mine was. Alongside a static show, many, many trade stalls there is also a Live stage, although it’s not against the clock and some of the cars were going round it quite gently it does give you a good chance to see the cars moving at least. We arrived before the doors opened and upon arriving found a shed full of the cars that would be on the stage, all sorts of noteworthy cars sitting around it from MK1 Escorts, Minis, Odd ball stuff, to Group B, Group A and more modern Rally cars, even a quite rare Ford RS1700T which was to be Ford’s Group B project before it was replaced by the RS200, we’d kind of dismissed it as an ugly mk4 GT until I did some reading about it when I came home. The show is about 15 mile from Birmingham airport and was easy to get to and from within the day, although the flights meant we had to come away before some of the bigger rally cars took to the stage in the afternoon. If you’re into rallying or older rally cars I highly recommend it.
