2011 - #15 - Nuttscorner Oval 4/6/2011 |
So onto the second night of racing in a fairly hectic weekend. The National Hot Rods once again took centre stage with the final night of their world qualifying. I think I've actually attended all sixteen rounds, which must be something of a first.
With the 2 litres in action on Sunday, it was at lightning rods that kicked the meeting off, with no fewer than 24 cars. Michael Lynch took the honours in both the heats which seen him upgraded to yellow for the final. After an eventful second heat, nineteen cars made it out for the final. Despite two stoppages Scott Cochrane led the final from lights to flag, taking his first win in the class.
The Stock Rods made their first appearance of the season at Nuttscorner Oval with seventeen cars in action. Richard Harper was the man on form taking a hat trick of wins, Johnny Cardwell was runner up in the final, with Richard Harper third.
Ten Nationals were in action for their final qualifying round, with Gary Woolsey going into the night with a two point lead over John Christie. Rab Forsythe took the opening heat with Mark Heatrick second and Glenn Bell third, less his bonnet which came off and was run over earlier in the race. Gary Woolsey increased his points lead over Christie with a fourth place, with Christie only picking up seventh. Heat two went to Forsythe as well, with Stewart Doak runner up, Bell third and Christie gaining ground by finishing a place ahead of Woolsey as they came home sixth and seventh. Woolsey entered the final with a six point lead over both Christie and Doak, but with Doak having the advantage of being front of the second group. Forsythe led them off with Doak gaining ground in the opening stage of the race, Doak got alongside Forsythe but was unable to make it stick on the outside and lost second to Keith Martin before slipping further down the field, Martin was able to get passed Forsythe and moved through to the lead. Christie and Woolsey too passed Forsythe too. With two laps to go Martin's car died, handing the lead and the victory to Christie, with Woolsey second which was enough to clinch the points title, Glenn Bell was third. The result sees Woolsey, Christie, Bell, Doak and Martin qualify for Ipswich with Mark Heatrick just missing out.
In the robins Billy McClean took heat one and the final with Rab Stewart taking heat 2.
