2012 - #1 - Ballymena Raceway 2/1/12
First of all Happy New Year to all my visitors, followers and people who perhaps don’t like me, but come here to fault find.
With New Years day on a Sunday, the traditional Ballymena new years meeting was on the official public holiday, Monday 2nd of January and that was the meeting I’d start my 2012 Stockcar Journey from.
The National Hot Rod turn out was a bit disappointing in comparison to recent years with the ranks boosted by Dave Casey and F3 star William Buller, there was still eight cars in action.
Keith Martin took the win in the opening heat, with Stewart Doak taking the second heat before winning the 5 car final to take the Winternational Crown. Buller had no wet tyres at his disposal and went backwards in heat one and didn’t come out in the remaining races.
The 2 Litre Hot Rods put on a excellent performance with 19 cars in action in heat one, which featured a fantastic side by side battle between Wayne Woolsey and Philip Beatty, with Woolsey taking victory right on the line by 0.007s. Heat two featured a similar Woolsey and Beatty battle, but this time it was for second and Shane Murray took a lights to flag win.
Woolsey led away the final with Beatty alongside and it was Beatty who benefited going around the outside and getting the better drive off the bends, Derek Martin had come off the outside of row two to go around Woolsey in the opening laps and was going about taking the lead from Beatty when Adam Heatrick got spun into the wall at the end of the home straight bringing out yellow flags and giving the lead back to Beatty. Beatty led on the restart but looked to start struggling for Grip and first Martin, then Woolsey and then Murray went passed him as the laps went by. Martin led to the flag with Woolsey second and Murray third.
The stock rods looked to have the best turn out of cars of the day and had the biggest shunt as one of the visiting Tipperary cars went into the back of Fergie Bevan in heat two, before rolling off the wall. Victor McAfee took the honours in the final with Stephen McCready second and Chris Gordon edging out Raymond Harper for third.
In the juniors there was a final win for Aiden McFerran, while Cutris Greer won the Gp2 Lightning Rods final.
