Local Sweep in F2 Irish Trip |
I may have missed the action on days one and two of the F2 NI Trip, but rest assured I was staying in touch with what was going on. I know in this day and age everyone pretty much knows what happened on social media as it happens, but in case you missed it, Graham Fegan won the Challenge Trophy on Friday night at Ballymena and Ryan McCrory won the Irish Open on Saturday night at Nutts Corner.

Great racing at Aghadowey, Shame so few seen it |
If you were outside oval racing and looked in you might be forgiven for thinking the sport is thriving, surely it must be, there is a big car show on the doorstep of two of the tracks and no one felt the need to go and promote the racing at it, and it’s following must so healthy you can run two meetings at the same time and both will pull a crowd….. except that isn’t the case.

Hylands Hat-trick as Winter Continues |
It’s perhaps fitting that the National Hot Rod World series that started with perhaps the wettest Hot Rod race ever also came to a close on another miserable night at Tullyroan, in conditions definitely less fitting with the end of May. While the conditions were pretty grim to photo in, they did produce some good racing.

Tullyroan Oval 24/5/15 |
It might not be that long into the season but it’s already starting to feel like a bit of a relentless battle of never ending racing stuff, so I was thankful to have what is quite a long break from the previous Friday’s meeting at Aghadowey to Sunday’s meeting, although I would have been at Ballymena on Friday night had I not been at the Clarkson, Hammond and May Live tour. An autograss outing and taking a room apart to decorate have also kept me on my toes over the past week.

First wet one of the year at Aghadowey |
Aghadowey had got off to a nice dry start to the season, but eventually it was inevitable there would be a wet meeting. While recent years there has been a run of tracks getting wet or dry meetings, the wet weather seems to be following the National Hot Rods around, I think I’m right in saying this was their third wet meeting on the trot.

Tullyroan Oval 9/5/15 |
In normal circumstances I’d be sitting down and writing a report on a cracking meeting at Tullyroan Oval, adding some detail to mention that the Superstox final was the race of the night, Jonny Cardwell was in a class of his own in the Stock Rods and how even the Classic Hot Rods were quite enjoyable. This isn’t a normal day though and it’s not normal circumstances, today the sport has lost a young talent in Keir Millar following an incident in the Ministox at Lochgelly last night. Although fatalities in Oval racing and indeed motorsport as a whole are few and far between it’s never good when the happen and it’s exceptional tough when it’s a competitor of such a young age. Keir had made a few trips to NI in his Ninja Kart days, probably winning more races than he didn’t when he visited NI. My thoughts go out to Keir’s family, friends and staff and spectators at HRP.

May Day At Aghadowey |
There seems to have been some sort of switch over in the weather, I don’t want to scud it, but we’ve now had three dry meetings out of three at Aghadowey this season, which I believe is more than we managed all last season, while Tullyroan been mounting a challenge to be known as the wet and miserable venue this season so far. I suppose it being T-shirt weather at Lochgelly on the Saturday of the recent Speedweekend there should have been a sign that all is not normal with the weather.
